Israel: The Wounded Side

As Jacob set out for home,
A man wrestled with him,
Once he was finally alone.
The match revealed his sin,
Robbing Esau of all he’d own.

Jacob wrestled with God and man
Till the breaking of day.
Did Jacob really understand
Why he struggled this way?
Why he earned Israel as his name?

Or, why he couldn’t let God go
Till he got His blessing?
In a small way, we all know
That deceit receives cursing,
And that’s why sin torments us so.

With cause, God unhinges our lives,
Making us limp away
With a new name or last goodbye.
Yes. He has final say.
I, for one, nurse a wounded side.
