A Child’s Admiration (Memories)

Under all the superficial layers,
There’s a part of me, younger than the players.
I have memories of watching them in stadiums and the like
And of being small inside these places: larger than life.

So when I see these men–brazen and tough,
I remember with relish and love
The time I spent trying to be like them:
Hardening my body so I, too, could compete and win.
