I prayed to God that I might excel;
In the end, I didn’t fare so well.
I prayed to God that I might be rich;
He gave me trial after trial and bitter hardships.
I prayed to God for admiration;
He froze me in place, bound to hesitation.
I prayed to God that I might be great;
He made me small to try and frustrate.
In the end, I thought He didn’t care;
That of my personage He was unaware.
Not till my goals were crushed did I really know
Why He brought me ever so low:
It was to make me less and glory Him,
‘Cause He saved me despite my pervasive sin.
