A Child Who Teaches Us (Dedicated to John Ryan)

It’s hard to see a child in so much pain
From a tumor covering his brain
And makes us struggle to remain
Hopeful and not drift into disdain,
For the tempter lures us to complain.
But when the suffering boy
Treasures life with so much inner joy,
He reminds us there’s an admission price
To happiness which offers more return
For suffering brings a blessedness, a deeper Truth
We come to learn:
That our salvation cannot be earned,
But its prior valleys make us burn and burn
For God even though we long and yearn
For mountaintops which are but a vaporous concern.
