Dying To Self

It demands more when there is no space;
Seeks love for itself but will not return
The deeds it needs to flower or grow fruit;
Fails to believe that it needs to learn.

Works for the payoff at its pathways’ end;
Will not look around to find those in need;
Is filled with carnal desires and lusts.
What’s this, but our hearts when we’re unredeemed.

It pays the bill but takes no earthly goods;
Performs all the work but refuses
Creature comforts: the ease that others choose;
Allows us to win so that it can lose.

Cares not that its desires go unmet;
Considers its life lost at His expense;
Dies a thousand deaths to want everyday;
Longs to hear His voice and follow His way.
